Raw material: sawdust

Forests are one of the main resources of Ukraine, and timber processing is one of the most developed industries. Abundance of sawdust and non-standard timber remains after timber processing in carpentry shops, sawmills and furniture factories. Wood waste is often stored in the open air. Part of unprocessed wood is burned in a boiler room, though it is much more profitable to produce briquettes (synonym – euro firewood) or wood granules (referred to as

pellets). Production of briquettes from wood waste solves both the issue of providing inexpensive coolants and the global problem of harmful emissions into atmosphere, forest health, woodworking areas, etc.

What is more efficient, practical and cost-effective: production of briquettes or pellets? Let’s try to consider all pros and cons.

Equipment for production briquettes or pellets

Pellets from wood waste require expensive and complex equipment. Expensive and complex is also repair of the equipment, which often can be done only at production plant. Production of briquettes requires special presses which, at the same performance, are 30% cheaper.

Raw material

Sawdust pelletizing has high requirements (fraction should be particularly small; in some cases additional shredding is required). Various impurities are not allowed. Simultaneous availability of coarse shavings and separate large pieces does not affect operation of briquetting press.

Transportation and warehousing

Pellets are fragile product and therefore crumb in package while multiple transshipments. However, briquettes are covered with protecting crust and almost do not crumb while transshipments. Crumb does not affect combustion capability of briquettes.

Cost price

Cost of pellets is higher due to expensive equipment. Production labor should also be more qualified. Briquette production is cheaper due to less labor and energy intensity. The cost of equipment is mentioned above.

Today, pellets are produced only for export. Specialized boilers necessary for combustion of this type of fuel are rare in Ukraine. Production of briquettes is beneficial both for domestic and foreign market: briquette is combusted in usual solid-fuel boilers, furnace and fireplace or directly on fire.

Where to use

Pellets are mainly used in industry due to lack of special boilers. Fuel briquettes are used both by industrial plants and thermal stations, and by owners of country houses, restaurants, fans of kebabs and real fireplaces.

Both fields differ from each other both by great benefits and a significant number of future prospects.

Perhaps, the government will pay attention to the necessity of supporting producers and consumers of ecological fuel, since the future of our forests, coal mines, and ours depends on the use of renewable and cheap fuel resources. It is worth considering.

Today, it is easy to provide your agricultural and woodworking enterprise and even to heat the small town with low-cost fuel by producing briquettes from industrial waste. Required briquetting equipment is supplied by Ukrainian manufacturer PE “Bryketuiuchi Tehnologii”.
